BEEKEEPING 101 & 201

Saturday, February 19th 2022 9am – 11:30am & 12pm -2:30 Combined Class of Beekeeping 101 & 201 OR Just take ONE class.  We will also be holding the same classes on

Sunday, February 20th 2022 9am – 11:30am & 12pm -2:30

We can only have 10 – 15 students per class due to Covid restrictions.  Masks are required.

Beekeeping 101 – Honeybees and Beekeeping

Come learn about the honeybee species Apis mellifera and how humans keep and tend them and help the beekeeping community. Topics will range from basic biology of the individual honeybee and the colony structure, to the basic understanding of beekeeping, including frames, boxes, clothing, smoker, and hive tools.​

Beekeeping 201 – Hive Inspection & Logs

In this class Danny will be showing us the fundamentals for performing a hive inspection. We will focus on minimizing both the damage to the honeybees and the hive equipment as well as the signs to look for in a healthy colony. Images will be used to demonstrate typical and healthy hives. We will finish with the importance of hive logs and tracking your data over time.

Returning to instruct the course is Danny Najera.

The course fee is $90 for the combined classes or $50 for one class and will be held at the Bees in the ‘Burbs store complex (28634 Maple Valley Black Diamond Road SE, Maple Valley 98038). Please call or stop by the store to sign up.

Dress warmly as the class is held in our warehouse.   We have heaters, but it can still be chilly.

About Danny.  A Kent-Meridian graduate, and Oklahoma native, Danny Najera earned his Bachelors and PhD from the University of Kansas and considers himself a scientist (Entomologist and Ecologist) and a teacher. He has taught at several colleges and universities, including the University of Kansas, and is currently instructing at Green River College.
